Watch Film Noir Classic Collection, Vol. 1 Online Right Now!

Some boxed sets claim to be definitive, but are haphazardly selected. Not this one. Four of the five titles here can legitimately lay claim to being essentials in the film noir canon, and the fifth, The Set-Up, is a terrific boxing picture with a strong noir atmosphere. If you’re a fan of noir–or have no idea what it’s all about–this collection is a treat.

Of course, none of these movies were made as “film noir.” The term was coined later by French critics to describe the moody, anxious feel of postwar American movies, especially the genre that highlighted duplicitous dames and susceptible men lost in the criminal jungle. Indeed, the title The Asphalt Jungle conveys the edgy urban arena of these pictures. That film is John Huston’s masterly 1950 account of a heist, with Sterling Hayden the disenchanted, noirish hero. Joseph H. Lewis’s Gun Crazy (1949) is one of the most supercharged (and sexually perverse) of noir films, with John Dall and Peggy Cummins as young criminals in love. Murder, My Sweet (1944) is a straight adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s novel Farewell, My Lovely. Amid the film’s shadowy chiaroscuro, former musical comedy star Dick Powell makes a career-changing transition as Chandler’s private dick, Philip Marlowe. Out of the Past puts Robert Mitchum (perhaps the quintessential noir actor) in trouble with gangster Kirk Douglas, complicated by classic femme fatale Jane Greer. Jacqus Tourneur provides the evocative direction. And The Set-Up plays out an ingenious boxing tale in “real time,” superbly enacted by (former boxer) Robert Ryan. –Robert Horton

The rugged but properly G-rated Man and Boy gives Bill Cosby (as producer and star) an impressive showcase in a rare dramatic role. Cosby’s just right as a former cowboy and Union Army “blu-belly” who, in 1871, must defend his Arizona homestead against resentful white bigots. When his plow horse is stolen, he sets out to retrieve the animal with his 12-year-old son (played by George Spell, one of the finest child actors of the early ’70s), and their desert ordeal places them in the crossfire of a long-standing feud between a crazed thief and a vengeful sheriff. The routine plot plays like a Western rehash of The Bicycle Thief, and veteran TV director E.W. Swackhamer handles the action with a generic absence of style. Cosby and Spell make a terrific father-son team, however, while costars Yaphet Kotto and Henry Silva add another element of threat. Solid family entertainment, especially if you’re ready to explain horse studding to your children. –Jeff Shannon

Even before it premiered on September 13, 1977 (Tusdays at 9:30 pm on ABC), Soap was mired in controversy (including 32,000 letters of protest) and primed to make television history. Conceived as a primetime satire of daytime melodramas, this groundbreaking series toppled many of the TV taboos that remained after All in the Family and M*A*S*H, openly addressing a variety of risky topics (homosexuality, infidelity, impotence, familial murder) with a deft combination of irreverent wit, wacky slapstick, supreme stupidity, and–key to its success–engaging drama from characters you could really care about, regardless of their rampant quirks and foibles.

As a friendly announcer informs us, “this is the story of two sisters” in suburban Connecticut–wealthy dimwit Jessica Tate (Katherine Helmond) and blu-collar housewife Mary Campbell (Cathryn Damon)–whose class-divided families are bound by enough scandalous secrets to make each of these 25 episodes (all written by creator-producer Susan Harris and directed by sitcom veteran Jay Sandrich) a polished gem of half-hour comedy. The integration of plot and character is flawless, and dirty laundry was rarely this absurd: Jessica’s cheating on her cheating husband (Robert Mandan, the show’s underrated lynchpin); stepson Jodie (Billy Crystal) is (gasp!) openly gay, and brother Danny (Ted Wass) has Mafia connections; daughter Corrine (Diana Canova) is in love with a priest; Mary’s husband Burt (manic genius Richard Mulligan) is a would-be killer who thinks he’s invisible; and all of them are suspects in a murder case that fuls the season’s cliffhanger finale.

This is ensemble comedy at its finest, and is it any wonder Robert Guillaume–as the Tates’ insolent servant Benson–got his own spin-off sitcom in 1979? His line readings (such as “You want me to get that?” when the doorbell rings) are instant classics, and while Helmond tops the cast with her inimitable brand of idiocy, there’s not a weak link in the entire cast. All those protesting prudes fought a futile battle: Soap was never naughty without purpose (indeed, the show possesses subtle integrity) and a large and loyal audience propelled it to even crazier heights in subsequnt seasons. (Technical note: Given the shortcomings of 25-year-old videotape, with minor glitches and color variations, these episodes look and sound remarkably good.) –Jeff Shannon

Despite her protests, Kero insists that Sakura must become a Cardcaptor and retrieve them before they work mischief on the world. As she pursus various Cards, Sakura’s best friend Tomoyo videotapes her adventures. Shaoran Li, a student from Hong Kong related to Clow Reed, initially challenges Sakura’s right to the Cards. As they move from reluctant allies to friends, the relationship is complicated by Shaoran’s loudmouth cousin Meilin. Toya, who “sees things other people can’t,” keeps a watchful eye the magical goings-on.

Sakura wins increasingly powerful Cards, but is haunted by a recurring dream in which she battles an unseen foe atop Tokyo Tower. Meilin returns to Hong Kong, allowing the partnership between Sakura and Shaoran develop smoothly. When Sakura captures the last Card, she faces the confrontation she saw in her dreams. Losing this battle would have dire consequnces. But Sakura proves herself worthy to become the new master of the Cards: the timid girl of the first episodes has discovered reserves of inner strength she didn’t know she possessed. The arrival of Eriol, who is somehow linked to Clow Reed, produces new troubles for Sakura and her friends, just as Shaoran is coming to grips with the awkward realization that he likes Sakura. The interplay of personal moments and the increasingly ominous plot keeps this extremely popular “magical girl” series moving smoothly through the two and half seasons included in this collection.
