I gave a rave review to the first three seasons. Then I didn’t review the fourth because, well, I wasn’t impressed but I didn’t want to say anything. However, near the end of the fourth season, it got funny again.

Why am I talking about this? Because in Season Five, they’re back! It’s hilarious again, which is absolutely the most fabulous way to wrap up the AbFab experience. I’m very happy, and I’m putting this into my little “keeper” collection for repeat viewing.

Series 5 draws a great conclusion to a fabulous series. The comedy stylings still remain fresh and there are subtle and clever references for long time fans of this series and of the French and Saunders duo. We found this well worth the watch.

An Entertaining, But Not Great, End To The Series

As as series-long fan of the AbFab girls, I bought this last DVD in great anticipation. However, it was a bit disappointing. Not as funny as the rest.

For the longtime fans, like me, there are lots of inside jokes (picking up on things that happened in previous programs). It’s always fun to go back and relive the old situations - but might be a bit confusing to those who come to AbFab through this series. Best to start at the beginning to get the full effect.

I liked the last three episodes - where Saffy has her baby and the episodes following it - the best. John, the father of Saffy’s baby, really made me laugh, especially in his dealings with Saffy’s parents. And, I will always love Bo. God Bless Mo Gaffney! Finally, these last three episodes made me realize truly how nightmarish Edina was as a mother.

I agree with the other reviewer about the crazy BBC intro that you can’t get around. I have found this on other BBC DVD’s as well - and I’ll tell you, it doesn’t give a warm and fuzzy feeling. Certainly doesn’t make ME want to go out and buy more. However, this isn’t the forum to complain about that - next e-mail: to the BBC.com site! Join me there if you agree….no more mandatory intros!

It’s No ‘Lonesome Dove,’ But It Still Has Merit

I thought this recent TV miniseries was okay but a far cry from “Lonesome Dove, ” as it was being compared since it is a prequel to that famous story.

“Commanche Moon” is definitely worth a watch for any fan of westerns. Just don’t expect it to be as intense as “Lonesome Dove.” Steve Zahn and Karl Urban are not Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones, and the characters they play aren’t as strong. Some say it’s unfair to criticize this movie because of the comparison but you have to compare it - it’s the story of the same two leading Texas Ranger characters: “Woodrow Call” and “Gus McCrae.”

The main difference, I found, was that this prequel is a lot of slower and more relational (the two Rangers and their women) at times. Yet, I didn’t mind that because the two main women were pretty ladies and likable people. They were played nicely by Linda Cardelini (”Clara Forsythe”) and Elizabeth Banks (”Maggie.”). They helped make this long movie palatable. Maggie’s son “Newt” was a wonderful kid, too - the kind of boy every parent would want.

The most interesting character, I thought, turned out to be “Inish Scull,” played by Val Kilmer. As in the western film, “Tombstone,” Kilmer almost steals the show from the leads. “Scull” is really an original, if I ever saw one: a strange dude, indeed.

Actually, all of the supporting actors in here did a fine job, from Keith Robinson’s “Deets” to Wes Studi as “Buffalo Hump.” I always find Studi to be fascinating, no matter what role he plays. I wish he had had a bigger role in this miniseries.

One thing this film has in common with “Lonesome Dove” and other good westerns: the scenery and photography. It’s just beautiful at times and is a joy to watch. We also have an excellent director of this film: Simon Wincer.

Another thing, you get your money’s worth: the two-disc DVD version is about 4 hours and 40 minutes.

Entertaining western

A wonderful prequel to ‘Lonesome Dove’, the characters in this moving western continue to deepen as they struggle to hang onto love, land, and a harsh way of life in a toilsome part of the country.

I am not happy with this product in that i have not received said product yet. I did receive an email from the person/business I bought it from saying they did mail it out, then went away for a few weeks. They returned to find the product returned to them because they entered the wrong address. She apologized, said the DVD was being mailed out immediately again and that I would be reimbursed for the cost because of her mistake. I was very understanding and replied to her email saying that was fine. I just watched Ike - Countown to D -Day. I was very impressed with Tom Sellack’s portrayal of The Great Eisenhower. I am a huge admirer of Eisenhower and really thought that Tom Sellack was able to bring accross so beautifully Ike’s character & humanity. Eisenhower represents, something that is so lost in today’s world, character & strength. I recently became interested in Eisenhower, and read several books on him, as well as speaches he wrote. This man was an incredible human being and Tom Sellack, to my surprise, is able to capture the essence of this Humble Giant, Ike had that very rare and unusual gift of Great simplicity. I highly recommend this film for those who are not familiar with Eisenhower. I can honestly state that Eisenhower was our greatest leader, and the world will never see another IKE.

Absent are the bloody battle scenes from Saving Private Ryan and Flags of Our Fathers, replaced by a blow-by-blow account of the planning and organizing that went into Operation Overlord. Tom Selleck delivers a masterful performance as Eisenhower, clearly showing the stress and strain that came with such a huge undertaking. The responsibility of Supreme Commander seems to come easy to Ike on the surface, but under that calm visage Eisenhower wrestles with the issues facing the Allies from both Nazi Germany, and his own command structure. Juggling huge egos and heavy decisions takes its toll on the general, but his leadership is eventually vindicated by the success of the D-Day invasion.

Any fan of World War II films should see this movie. It is an excellent addition to the WWII/war film genre.

Slow and Complicated - not a good film for those who aren’t very familiar with the historical background of this film.

I’m not a history buff, but I enjoy learning about historical events. I loved the movie “Thirteen Days,” so I looked to see what other films Amazon recommended under this genre. I purchased “IKE” because of the great reviews. I couldn’t finish watching the film because from the start, I had a difficult time understanding what the characters were talking about - I felt like I was thrown into the middle of heavy strategic planning and intense relationships among historical characters. It took me a while to figure out who was who and where they were. But by the time I started figuring out the basic details, I realized that I was missing so much of the other important details and story lines; I was lost. I think I would have enjoyed the film more if I had done some detailed reading before-hand about the relationships that took place among the military figures leading up to D-Day. Again, I’m not a history buff so I don’t know much about the details, but I was hoping this film could help me learn more. I would only recommend this film to those who have studied WWII and/or lived during that time.
